503 "Service Unavailable" errors for Google grants

Starting around August 14, 2025, we began to track a large increase in the number of failing Google API calls that returned a "Service Unavailable" error back from Google. These errors would cause a 503 error to be returned for the matching Nylas API call.

We have been working with Google regarding this issue but elevated error rates still remain. We have seen a reduction from the higher amount reported in late August, but the number of these errors are still high.

Currently, we are seeing about 0.0456% of all Google API calls return this error. This is still elevated compared to what we saw prior to August 2025.

The only work-around we can recommend at this time to is to have an exponential backoff and retry in place for any 503 API errors. Retries almost always succeed when done this way.

This was originally posted on the Nylas status page. Google has escalated this issue to their Product team for further review to determine whether this behavior represents a new baseline.

We will continue monitoring closely, working with Google, and posting updates here as we learn more.  Feel free to contact us via a Support ticket if you have any questions about this issue.
